A Duluth Yarn Shop Where Creativity and Community Come Together: Fiber Proud and Women Owned Since 1999
At Yarn Harbor, we believe a yarn shop should be more than a place to buy yarn. It should be a place to find inspiration, share ideas, learn something new, and connect with others who love working with fiber.
Located in Duluth's Lakeside neighborhood, just a few blocks from Lake Superior, Yarn Harbor has been welcoming knitters, crocheters, weavers, spinners, and fiber enthusiasts since 1999. We're proud to be an independent, women-owned yarn shop with deep roots in our community.
Our story began in 1999, when Lori Cushing opened Yarn Harbor. The shop later passed to Kristen Pass and Melonie Gaurne before Kathy Thomas purchased it in 2007. Through the years and changes in ownership, Yarn Harbor has remained women-owned, with a shared commitment to quality yarn, creativity, and helping customers enjoy their craft.
At Yarn Harbor, inspiration goes both ways. We love helping customers discover new yarns, ideas, and possibilities, and we're just as inspired by the colors they choose, the projects they create, and the creativity they share with us.
Our knowledgeable staff is here to help, whether you're picking out yarn for your first scarf, planning a sweater, exploring a new technique, or working through a tricky pattern. We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel welcome and comfortable asking questions.
Our shelves are filled with beautiful yarns from around the world, including traditional wool, natural fiber blends, and colorful hand-dyed yarns from independent dyers, including Minnesota makers. We also carry knitting needles, crochet hooks, books, patterns, project bags, notions, and supplies for spinning, weaving, and felting.

Street parking is available in front of the shop, with additional parking behind the building. Our front entrance on Superior Street is accessible without stairs.

Meet Kathy
When Kathy Thomas moved to Duluth in 2001, Yarn Harbor was where she learned to knit. As a new knitter, she discovered firsthand just how important a local yarn shop can be—not only for finding yarn and supplies, but for getting advice, encouragement, and support along the way.
Kathy purchased Yarn Harbor in 2007, continuing its tradition as an independent, women-owned business in Duluth. Her own experience as a customer continues to shape the way she runs the shop today.
Kathy believes that every maker brings their own ideas, preferences, and creativity to a project. She enjoys seeing the different ways people approach their knitting and crochet and believes there's rarely just one right way to do something. That's why offering a wide variety of yarns, fibers, textures, and colors is so important to her—giving customers the freedom to explore possibilities and make each project their own.
For Kathy, Yarn Harbor is a place where customers can find inspiration, ask questions, try something new, and know they'll have support along the way.
