Using a drop spindle is the perfect way to learn the ins and outs of spinning your own yarns. It is one of many methods to create yarn from fiber, and requires no previous knowledge of yarns or experience spinning. Using 100% wool spinning fiber and a drop spindle you can begin to make custom yarns with guidance from an experienced spinner.

Handspinning has been practiced for millenia, with the drop spindle being used for over 9,000 years before the spinning wheel was invented in India during the late Middle Ages. Drop spindles are a much smaller investment than wheels, and they give you the opportunity to practice your hand positions and build speed and confidence  without breaking the bank with big equipment.

In this two-part class we learn how to make a basic plied yarn from 100% wool spinning fiber. You will leave with knowledge of yarn construction, the importance of fiber content and preparation, and everything else you need to know in order to produce useable yarns!
